چکیده

This study evaluated the performance of a downflow hanging sponge (DHS) in reducing concentrations chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia (NH3), total suspended solids (TSS), and dissolved (TDS) high-strength organic wastewater (HSOW). The DHS unit was composed three segments connected vertically operated under different loading rates (OLRs) between 3.01 12.33 kg COD/m3sponge/d at constant hydraulic retention time (HRT) 3.6 h. results demonstrated that system achieved COD, NH3, TSS, TDS removal efficiencies 88.34 ± 6.53%, 64.38 4.37%, 88.13 5.42%, 20.83 1.78% an OLR COD/m3sponge/d, respectively. These significantly (p < 0.05) dropped to 76.39 6.58%, 36.59 2.91%, 80.87 5.71%, 14.20 1.07%, respectively, by increasing COD/m3sponge/d. variation COD experimental data well described first-order (R2 = 0.927) modified Stover–Kincannon models 0.999), providing organics (K1) 27.39 1/d, saturation value (KB) 83.81 g/L/d, maximum utilization rate (Umax) 76.92 g/L/d. Adding another reactor secondary phase improved final effluent quality, complying with most environmental regulation criteria except those related concentrations. Treating HSOW two sequential reactors economically feasible, energy consumption 0.14 kWh/m3 operating cost about 7.07 USD/m3. Accordingly, using dual DHS/DHS units remove nitrogen pollutants from would be promising cost-efficient strategy. However, tertiary treatment could required reduce

HYDRAULIC BEHAVIOR IN THE DOWNFLOW HANGING SPONGE BIOREACTOR Karakteristik Hidraulik pada Bioreactor Downflow Hanging Sponge

Performance efficiency in a Downflow Hanging Sponge (DHS) bioreactor is associated with the amount of time that a wastewater remains in the bioreactor. The bioreactor is considered as a plug flow reactor and its hydraulic residence time (HRT) depends on the void volume of packing material and the flow rate. In this study, hydraulic behavior of DHS bioreactor was investigated by using tracer met...

Reciprocating Constructed Wetlands for Treating High Strength Anaerobic Lagoon Wastewater

Innovative wastewater treatment systems are needed for removing nutrients, noxious odors, dissolved organic matter, and pathogens from high strength agricultural and processing wastewater. A novel reciprocating subsurface-flow constructed wetland, consisting of four cells totaling 3570 m (1.5 m deep), has been treating anaerobic lagoon wastewater from a commercial-scale confined swine feeding o...

Effect of sulfide inhibition and organic shock loading on anaerobic biofilm reactors treating a low-temperature, high-sulfate wastewater.

To assess the long-term treatment of sulfate- and carbon-rich wastewater at low temperatures, anaerobic biofilm reactors were operated for over 900 days at 20 degrees C and fed wastewater containing lactate and sulfate. Results showed the reactors could be operated at 20 degrees C with a load rate of 1.3 g-chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L x d or less and a sulfur loading rate (SLR) of 0.2 g-S/L x...

High levels of nitrifying bacteria in intermittently aerated reactors treating high ammonia wastewater.

Changes in the fractions of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in two laboratory-scale reactors were investigated using 16S rRNA probe hybridizations. The reactors were operated in intermittent aeration mode and different aeration cycles to treat anaerobically digested swine wastewater with ammonia concentrations up to 175 mg NH(3)-N/L. High ammonia removals (>98.8%) were...
